KIMISOO X 1922
A Masterpiece Woven by Time

In an era where true craftsmanship carries both an essential and symbolic value, the rug in your hands is more than just a decorative piece—it is a story of heritage, patience, and artistry. Created decades ago using time-honored techniques passed down through generations, this rare Afghan rug embodies a lost tradition, one where every stage of its making was a slow, meditative process, untouched by industrial shortcuts.

Much like KIMISOO’s commitment to authentic, high-quality craftsmanship, this piece is a testament to purity and sustainability. The wool, sourced from local flocks, has been spun using traditional hand spindles, while its natural dyes—derived from botanical extracts, roots, and minerals—have been set by the forces of nature. This is a true organic rug, woven with integrity and respect for the materials.

This rug features the Filfa or Filpei pattern—named after the Persian phrase for "elephant’s foot"—a distinctive design woven by the Ghum Bash tribe, a branch of the renowned Ersari Turkmen people. The Ersari, one of the major Turkmen tribes of northern Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, have a long history of migration and adaptation. Originally settled along the eastern shores of the Caspian Sea, they moved towards the Amu Darya River Valley in the 17th century, later enduring forced resettlements due to political shifts. Their identity, however, remained unshaken, woven into the very fabric of their art.

The rugs of the Ersari tradition reflect the tribe’s nomadic spirit—bold, timeless, and deeply rooted in nature. Their craftsmanship, much like KIMISOO’s philosophy, goes beyond aesthetics; it is about preserving a connection to history. The intricate guls (medallions) found in this piece, including the ertman and tauk nosta, are emblematic of the tribe’s storytelling through design.

Ersari weaving stands apart in the rich landscape of Central Asian textiles, often mistaken for Bokhara rugs due to their similar deep reds, natural indigo blues, and soft whites. Yet, within their fibers, one can trace a journey through time—a migration of culture, tradition, and resilience. From Andkhoy, a historic trading hub of Ersari rugs, these weavings were once sought after in the 19th century as one of Afghanistan’s most prized exports. The dyes—extracted from madder root, indigo plant, and pomegranate rind—speak to the same natural purity that KIMISOO holds sacred.

Owning this rug is not merely an acquisition; it is an invitation to partake in a lineage of artisanship, much like the textiles of KIMISOO. It is a piece meant not only to adorn but to be lived with, treasured, and eventually passed down—just as true craftsmanship was always meant to be.

1922 envisions the preservation of “imperfect” vintage rugs, pioneering a revolutionary movement in color restoration. Defined by its organic evolution, each piece is truly unique—once a traditional rug, now a contemporary work of art.
