In 1922, history took a dramatic turn. The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the tragedy of the Greco-Turkish War forced thousands to flee Anatolia. Among them was a family of carpet merchants. In the chaos of their departure, they devised a daring plan—
hiding their most valuable rugs within the layers of their mattresses, stripping out the cotton filling to make space. Under the cover of night, they boarded a ship bound for Greece, carrying with them not just textiles but a legacy of craftsmanship.
Decades later, in a distant land, a collector in the United States—’1922’—retraces the steps of these artisans, reviving lost stories and preserving the imperfect beauty of vintage rugs.
